A homeowner searching for “basement development Edmonton” and a homeowner noticing a finished basement on Instagram are at different points in a decision. Both may become customers. They need different messages and a different first step.
For a contractor choosing between Google Ads and Meta Ads, the best starting channel depends on the type of work you want, how customers decide and what your team can do with an enquiry. Starting with both is not automatically the more complete plan.
Google Ads can reach an existing search for a contractor
Search advertising can put your offer in front of people actively looking for a service. That is useful when there is relevant demand and your page makes the fit clear: the work you accept, the area you cover, credible project proof and an obvious way to request an estimate.
The catch is that search intent varies. Someone looking for a basement repair, a renovation cost guide or a construction job may not be looking for your basement-development service. Keyword choices, search-term review and exclusions matter as much as writing an attractive ad.
Meta Ads can make a project worth considering
Facebook and Instagram give visual services room to explain a transformation. A finished space, a before-and-after sequence or a short walkthrough can help a homeowner understand what the project could accomplish.
That does not mean every person who submits a form is ready for an estimate. The offer should set expectations about scope, coverage and the next conversation. A contractor advertising complete renovations may need to explain the scale of the work early rather than attracting enquiries for minor touch-ups.
Use your sales process as part of the decision
If you can respond quickly, qualify project scope and arrange site visits, a Meta lead-form test may be practical. If nobody can consistently follow up, buying more submissions can create a larger queue without creating more work.
For a Google Ads test, the phone and website need equal attention. A strong search campaign cannot recover a missed call that never receives a callback. Decide who owns the enquiry, how it is logged and what counts as a useful prospect before launch.
What an Edmonton renovation example shows
In Ayra’s Alberta Home Fix case study, the campaign compared a finished-basement offer with a transformation message. The important lesson was how enquiries progressed into measurements, estimates and a client-reported closed project. A cheaper form lead was not automatically the more valuable lead.
This is an example of one campaign, not a forecast for another contractor. Your offer, budget, timing and follow-up may produce different outcomes.
A practical way to choose the first test
Consider Google first when customers already search for the specific work you want and you have a relevant landing page and dependable call handling.
Consider Meta first when the transformation is visually clear, you have real project material and a focused offer, and your team can qualify and follow up with enquiries.
Use a staged combination when the first channel is measurable and working, the team has capacity and the additional budget can support a meaningful second test.
With a limited budget, choose one service and a small number of hypotheses. Trying to advertise every trade, every location and several offers at once makes it harder to learn why a campaign works.
Compare booked opportunities, not just advertising columns
Track service fit, contact rate, estimates booked and jobs won alongside spend. Account for the time between enquiry and decision; a major renovation may not close within the week it was advertised.
